Hugh’s Review of Mary Queen of Scots

Friday 6th September 7.30pm

At Newburgh Cinema we have had a bit of a tradition of starting the season with a Scottish Film. So this year we start with “Mary Queen of Scots”.

Starring Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth this handsome film charts the life of Mary once she came back to Scotland from France to attempt to regain her position as Queen of Scotland. But she faces many challenges and in this contemporary take on that period, particularly from the nobles and religious leaders who are scheming and plotting behind her back. And of course, ending up with her execution by Queen Elizabeth the First.

Saoirse Ronan gives a spirited and subtle performance and Margot Robbie is quite unforgettable as the white-faced queen.
This may not be an entirely accurate rendition of history but Scotland never looked as good and this is a great way to get a history lesson.
